Phaidon brengt een artistieke ode aan de tuinbouw

Tuinen fascineren al eeuwenlang. Uitgever Phaidon duikt in de kleurrijke wereld van tuinbouw met de uitgave van het boek Garden: Exploring the Horticultural World. Hierbij ligt de focus vooral op de rol van kunst in dit alles.

Het is vooral de wisselwerking tussen kunstenaars en tuinen die centraal staat. Zo zijn er ontwerpen voor tuinen gemaakt door kunstenaars, vooral in een tijd dat we nog geen ontwerpen konden maken op een computer, maar ook kunstenaars die een eigen draai geven aan het concept tuin. Een mooi voorbeeld daarvan is het werk van Monsieur Plant, die planten laat groeien op niet voor de hand liggende plaatsen. Hiermee slaat hij een brug tussen populaire cultuur en natuur.

Ook zien we kunstenaars die een Japanse tuin hebben nagemaakt met LEGO of het werk van Claire Takacs, een van de beroemdste tuinfotografen van dit moment. Andere kunstenaars die aan bod komen zijn Pierre Bonnard, Roberto Burle Marx, Lucas Cranach de Oude, Gertrude Jekyll, Claude Monet, Marianne North, Crispijn de Passe, William Robinson, Alma Thomas en Howard Sooley Wie door de 352 bladzijden van Garden: Exploring the Horticultural World bladert, zal zich regelmatig op onverwachte wijze geïnspireerd voelen.
